Sareta and Chioma welcome social media and brand manager, Jessica Deeker. Jessica is currently an expat based in the Caribbean. “What’s the difference between an expat and an immigrant?” the ladies asked- Well, an expat temporarily resides in a country outside of their place of birth to work. An immigrant lives in the country permanently.

Although Chioma discusses how she probably wouldn’t work abroad due to missing home comforts, including a cuppa, Sareta is up for sunnier climates. Have any of you thought about a new life abroad?

Jessica Deeker is a British social media and brand manager who works in Grenada creating content in the sun! By definition, she’s an expat, and today, we’ll be discussing what it’s like to have your dream job in a dreamy location.

Grenada is a small island country of volcanic origin in the eastern Caribbean. It lies just 160 kilometres north of Venezuela. Grenada has a ridge of mountains that run from north to south with steep valleys. It also features large areas of tropical rainforest.

Famed for its aromatic spices and organic chocolate, the tri-island destination of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique is located in the eastern Caribbean just south of Barbados. The climate of Grenada is tropical, which means that between January and May you can expect a lot of rain. The rest of the year is hot and dry with temperatures reaching 30°C. Although Grenada is a beautiful country to consider, be aware that the island is susceptible to hurricanes.

Music is a big part of Grenada’s culture, and calypso is the most popular genre, as well as reggae, dancehall, and parang. All of these genres can be heard during their yearly carnival.

Grenada can be described as the epitome of a Caribbean island and many expats’ dream destination. It has beautiful beaches, waterfalls, and exotic wildlife. Afternoons can be spent in the markets, shopping for spices and fish, and evenings can be enjoyed while sipping the locally-made rum.

A Social Media Manager is responsible for overseeing a company’s interactions with the public by implementing social media platforms’ content strategies. Their duties include analysing engagement data, identifying trends in customer interactions and planning digital campaigns to build community online.

Small businesses will often employ a singular person to undertake both roles. However, as social media platforms have grown in recent years, most business owners realise the need for small marketing teams. Content creation doesn’t stop at writing; it includes photography, videography, and a creative vision. Jessica explained that she has grown a team to ensure she stays on top when it comes to delivering.

Diary of A CEO podcast – “A few years ago I was a broke, university dropout, living in one of the worst parts of the country, alone, with nothing but a laptop & a dream. Fast forward a few years, I’m the 29-year-old ex CEO of one of the UK’s fastest-growing companies. That company is called Social Chain.” – Steven Bartlett.
